Artist Statement

In Scenic Cruising, I seek to transmute the shadowed geographies of gay cruising into radiant tableaux, reimagining these spaces as hallowed grounds of connection and defiance. Inspired by the evocative aesthetic of vintage national park posters from the golden age of travel, this collection elevates infamous cruising locales from the margins of stigma into luminous celebration. Each work is a tribute to the resilience and audacity of those who, under the weight of societal constraint, carved out sanctuaries of desire. These are not mere places but palimpsests of memory, layered with the echoes of fleeting glances, whispered codes, and the electric pulse of possibility. Cruising is an art form-a choreography of instinct and vulnerability, where the ordinary becomes sacred through the alchemy of human connection. A nod, a footfall, the rustle of leaves underfoot: these are the brushstrokes that paint the canvas of the night. The works in this collection present a stage where this dance is played - an interplay of anonymity and intimacy, where public and private blur into a liminal space of radical presence. Each location, rendered with vibrant yet subtle homage, carries the weight of its own history and future potential.The imagery, at first glance, evokes the nostalgia of tourism, designed to adorn a t-shirt or poster with the charm of an iconic vistas. To the uninitiated, these are mere celebrations of The City's sometimes unlikely landmarks captured beautifully. Yet, for those who know, the subtext hums beneath the surface, a knowing wink hidden in plain sight. These works are both universal and clandestine, speaking simultaneously to the casual observer and the initiated, who recognize the coded language of a shadowed grove or a neon-lit corner.Cruising, in its essence, is a quiet rebellion-a refusal to be rendered invisible, a reclamation of the ephemeral. To engage in cruising is to embrace both risk and reward, to stake a claim to one's own body and longing in a world that often polices both. It is a radical act of being, a middle finger to the sanitized narratives of romance, favoring instead the raw poetry of a stranger's gaze on a hiking trail, on the sands of a hidden beach, or under a flickering streetlamp. Through Scenic Cruising, I invite you to linger in these liminal spaces, to trace the contours of their beauty as I do.Each piece is a love letter to the transient, a celebration of the courage to seek, to want, to exist unapologetically. In these works, I aim to honor the mosaic of want and wonder that cruising represents, painting it in hues vibrant and defiant, where desire, like art thrives in the spaces where most of the world looks away.
